6 best universities in Kenya have made it to the list of top 100 universities in Africa. For yet another time, the University of Nairobi has retained its status after leading six other universities in Kenya to the list of top 100 universities in Africa.

I remember the day when I joined UoN and during the orientation, the vice Chancellor kept on repeating to us the UoN is the best university in Sub Saharan Africa.

Their success is definitely something that the University takes with pride. The campus has produced ready professionals in Kenya thanks to their seasoned professors and systems.  The University of Nairobi this year moves a notch higher to be ranked at eighth best university in Africa.

According to the International higher education search engine and directory, the University of Nairobi is and remains to be the best University in East and Central Africa. The university has been ranked at position 1,071 globally which is a drop from position 990 six months ago.

Makerere University which is also one of the best universities in the region was ranked at position 23 in Africa and the Second Best University in East and Central Africa.

Kenyatta University which is one of the biggest universities in Kenya and most popular in the region came at second position in Kenya after UoN.

However, the University has dropped more than 10 places and was ranked at position 35 in Africa. KU has its global rank sitting at position 2368.

JKUAT or Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology fell in third place among the 6 best Universities in Kenya that made it to the top 100 universities in Africa. JKUAT held the 80th position in Africa and position 4398 in the world.

Best Private Universities in Kenya

The fourth best university in Kenya is Strathmore University which is also the best private university in Kenya. Strathmore took 4th position out of the 62 universities that were ranked in Kenya.

It is impressive that Strathmore beat public universities to scoop the 83rd position of best Universities in Africa and position 4615 in the world.

The fifth position out of the 6 Best Universities in Kenya was also taken by a private university.

USIU Africa which is one of the most popular private universities in Kenya took the 5th position of the best university in Kenya and 2nd position as the second-best private university in Kenya. It was also ranked at position 86 in Africa.

Mount Kenya University which is one of the youngest Universities in Kenya took 6th place in the list of 6 Best Universities in Kenya.

The university has been ranked ahead of other public universities like Moi University, Egerton University and Technical University of Kenya (TUK).

However, these universities made their way to the list of 200 best universities in Africa. MKU took home position 96 in Africa. Egerton University was position 128th Moi University came position 153, and TUK came at position 198th.

Of the 62 popular universities in Kenya, some of the popular universities that did not make it to the list of top institutions of higher learning in Africa include;

  • Maseno University
  • Multimedia University
  • Maasai Mara University

The list of best universities in Africa is released annually by ranking tools such as webometrics.

It is evident that East Africa needs to pull up its socks since the University of Nairobi is the only university in East Africa that has made its way to the list of top 10 institutions of higher learning in Africa. The latter is dominated by universities from South Africa.

The best university in Africa being, University of Pretoria followed by the University of Cape Town. The America n University of Cairo in Egypt closes the list of top 10 universities in Africa.

The rankings are obtained following an algorithm sampled from five unbiased and independent web metrics extracted from different search engines that include Majestic SEO, Google page rank, and Alexa Traffic rank.

In the global ranks, Massachusetts Institute of Technology is the best in the world followed by Harvard and Stanford, all from the US. The list of 50 best universities in the world comprises of 41 universities in US, 3 from Great Britain, 4 from China and 2 from Canada.
