Kenyan counties, known in Swahili as "kauntis", are the geographic units envisioned by Kenya's 2010 constitution as the units of the devolved administration.
The County Governments Act of 2012 and Articles 191 and 192 of the Constitution of Kenya grant the necessary authority. The counties also serve as single-member electoral districts for the election of senators to Kenya's senate and women's representatives to the national assembly.
As of the 2013 general election, Kenya is divided into 47 counties, each of which is roughly the same as the officially recognized districts. After a period of restructuring, the national government of Kenya now has a presence in each county through commissioners appointed by the national government.
List of Counties in Kenya
After the general elections of March 2013, county administrations were constituted in 47 counties (mainly based on the districts of Kenya in 1992). The Constitution of Kenya includes a list of the counties in its First Schedule.
Because to the new constitution, Kenya has been divided into 47 semi-autonomous counties. Area and population data from the 2009 and 2019 censuses are provided for each county below. The counties are organized by the former province from which they were separated.
